2007 Sows Ear Semillon
The Sows Ear Semillon comes off two vineyards this year. The 90 year old vineyard that we have used from the start and the Allandale black Creek Vineyard in Lovedale.
The old vines provide the structure to the wine while the Allandale vineyard always seems to produce Semillons with uncommon depth of flavour and body. The combination results in a true aging style of Semillon, super acidic but with enough body and character that this is not immediately obvious. This is the best Semillon I have ever made!
This wine fair jumps up out of the glass. Lemons, limes and passionfruit can be smelt long before your nose gets anywhere near it. The palate is classically crisp, with a limey intensity. Drink this wine right now with freshly shucked oysters and a squeeze of lime. However, if you don’t get to it in the next 18 months then please just let it be for about 8 years before re-visiting it. The wine will then be a deeper gold, with a nose of honey and buttered toast.
The acid will have softened and the wine become more generous. Try it then with cooked seafoods with sauces.
