2011 Sows Ear Semillion
I first wrote tasting notes on wines off this vineyard in 1999. To be honest, its getting boring. The thing is, this is a great vineyard. It grows great grapes and makes great wine. If you like Hunter Semillon (or to be brutally honest if you have never had a good Hunter Semillon experience) this is the wine for you. Proper Hunter Semillon has palate weight and richness, its not green, thin, pissy and tart. The acid that underpins the style should be soft, but present.
This is a wine that you can drink. Or age. But really, why not just grab a dozen Sydney Rock oysters and a slice of lime this summer and get stuck in to what is one of the great food and wine experiences.
This wine shows floral, bordering on tropical flavours courtesy of a long cloudy ripening period. The palate is still limey as regular drinkers of this wine would expect with a defined acid backbone, but the body of the wine is sufficient to create a Semillon which is entirely balanced.
Drink it over the coming Spring and Summer or put it down for a decade.
